Across the world, even in the most poor and underdeveloped nations, positive emotions are consistently tied to better health ( Pressman, Gallagher, & Lopez, 2013 ). Positive emotions can also serve as the antidote” to stress, protecting us against some of its damaging effects ( Fredrickson, 2001 ; Pressman & Cohen, 2005 ; see Figure 2). Similarly, looking on the bright side can also improve health. Today, we face more chronic disease than ever before because we are living longer lives while also frequently behaving in unhealthy ways. Mellow Out Monday with Stressbusters at the MSE Q level from 8-10 p.m. Persistent stress has been shown to have many negative effects on our health, including: loss of sleep, mood disorders, cardiovascular risks, digestive disorders and decreased immune response which increases susceptibility to colds, flu and other illnesses. Eating fruit and vegetables every day helps children grow and develop, boosts their vitality and can reduce the risk of many chronic diseases. Regular physical activity is important for the healthy growth, development and well-being of children and young people.
We can also slip into the habit of choosing unhealthy snacks and take-away foods or spending our free time watching TV or in front of the computer. Spend time with the kids while modeling healthy eating. The link between good nutrition and healthy weight, reduced chronic disease risk, and overall health is too important to ignore.
